Ecuador steps up oil‑ban enforcement in Amazon Indigenous territory

Ecuador's government is facing growing pressure to enforce a court‑ordered oil ban in the Tagaeri and Taromenane Indigenous territories, amid fears of further environmental and cultural harm.

In early March 2026, Ecuador has come under renewed scrutiny for not fully complying with an Inter‑American Court of Human Rights ruling that requires a halt to oil activities in the Tagaeri and Taromenane Indigenous territories in the Amazon. Environmental and Indigenous rights groups warn that continued road‑building, seismic exploration, and planning for new drilling blocks threaten pristine rainforest, waterways, and the uncontacted peoples living in voluntary isolation. Local communities and NGOs demand that the state enforce the ban strictly, suspend pending oil contracts, and redirect investment toward conservation and sustainable alternatives to protect biodiversity and Indigenous rights.
