EPA releases major nitrogen pollution update for Irish rivers

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has published new nitrogen indicators for major Irish rivers in 2025, showing rising nitrogen levels as a key emerging environmental concern.

On 19 March 2026 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released its Early Insights Nitrogen Indicators, setting out the latest assessment of nitrogen levels in Ireland’s major rivers for the period January–December 2025. The data indicate that nitrogen pollution has increased over the previous monitoring period, raising concerns about the impact on water quality, biodiversity, and ecosystem health. The Agency warns that persistently high nitrogen discharges from agriculture, wastewater, and urban runoff threaten the ability of rivers to meet EU Water Framework Directive objectives. The report calls for stronger measures to reduce nutrient loading, improve land‑use practices, and enhance monitoring as part of Ireland’s broader environmental protection strategy.
