Belize Government Prepares Early for 2026 Sargassum Season

The Government of Belize is taking early action through the National Sargassum Task Force to minimize impacts of the 2026 sargassum influx on coastal and tourism sectors.

As the Caribbean continues to experience increased sargassum activity, the Government of Belize has launched proactive measures for the 2026 season through the National Sargassum Task Force, co‑chaired by the Ministry of Tourism and Ministry of Blue Economy and Marine Conservation. The Task Force is coordinating a national response across five priority coastal destinations—San Pedro, Caye Caulker, Seine Bight, Hopkins, and Placencia—focusing on site-specific deployment of cleanup equipment and refining operations based on lessons learned. While the influx cannot be prevented, the government aims to reduce environmental and economic impacts through sustained interagency coordination and community engagement. The Task Force continues advancing short‑ and long‑term sustainable solutions to protect Belize’s coastal ecosystems and tourism-dependent livelihoods.
