Solomon Islands MPs file no‑confidence motion against Manele

A broad coalition of opposition, independents, and People First MPs has filed a motion to oust Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele amid mass defections and a growing political crisis.

A coalition of opposition, independents, and People First MPs in the Solomon Islands has filed a motion of no‑confidence against Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele, following the defection of 19 government members and a mounting political crisis. Manele has so far refused to convene parliament to debate the motion, prompting challengers to warn of further escalation if he does not either resign or face a parliamentary vote. The ruling OUR Party has attempted to shore up its position by swearing in new ministers, including former PM Manasseh Sogavare as deputy prime minister. The standoff has heightened tensions over the country’s direction, especially amid ongoing debates about security ties with Australia and China, and the broader political fragmentation that could destabilize governance in the archipelago.
