Marine pollution training strengthens Solomon Islands coastal communities

Six coastal communities in the Solomon Islands have received specialist training to detect, mitigate and respond to marine pollution threats, boosting local resilience and food security.

Coastal communities on Guadalcanal, Western and Central provinces have completed a UK‑supported capacity‑building programme to respond to marine pollution risks from nearby shipwrecks and busy shipping routes. The initiative, delivered with the Solomon Islands Maritime Authority, includes practical drills, community education, and school‑based modules to enable early, low‑cost interventions during oil and chemical spills. By strengthening local readiness while national response systems are mobilised, the project aims to protect livelihoods, nearshore fisheries, water quality and public health in vulnerable island communities.
