New Zealand Climate Litigation Conference in Auckland

Legal and environmental experts convened in Auckland for a major climate litigation conference focused on climate accountability and court-based climate action.

On 26 March 2026 lawyers, academics, judges, and environmental advocates gathered in Auckland for the New Zealand Climate Litigation Conference, co-hosted by Lawyers for Climate Action, the New Zealand Centre for Environmental Law, and the Legal Research Foundation. The one-day hybrid event brought together national and international leaders to discuss landmark climate cases, public and private law tools, and the role of courts in addressing the climate crisis. A judicial panel featuring senior judges, chaired by Chief Justice Rt Hon Dame Helen Winkelmann, opened the conference and highlighted the growing importance of litigation in enforcing climate commitments. The conference is part of a broader push to strengthen climate accountability and influence policy through the legal system in New Zealand.
