Cholera outbreak response intensifies in Zambia
Zambia continues to battle a cholera outbreak first identified in August 2025, with multiple districts across several provinces reporting cases as of early 2026.
Zambia intensifies its response to a cholera outbreak first detected in August 2025 in Mpulungu District, Northern Province. The outbreak has since spread to 20 districts across eight provinces, with Luapula and Eastern Provinces remaining free of confirmed infections. As of early 2026, the country has recorded a cumulative total of 861 cholera cases and 16 deaths. Seven fatalities occurred in health facilities, while nine were recorded in community settings, underscoring the need for early symptom recognition and prompt medical care. The Ministry of Health continues to support affected districts with surveillance, water, sanitation and hygiene interventions, and community education to curb transmission and prevent further deaths.
