Uganda-DRC border tensions flare amid eastern Congo conflict

Ugandan security forces reinforce their eastern border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo following renewed clashes and cross-border incursions linked to M23 and allied armed groups.

Recent reports indicate heightened tensions along Uganda's eastern frontier with the Democratic Republic of the Congo as fighting in eastern DRC spills over into border communities. Ugandan People's Defense Forces (UPDF) have increased patrols and checkpoint density in districts bordering North Kivu, responding to repeated cross-border movements of armed groups and refugees. Local officials report frequent nighttime skirmishes, sporadic gunfire exchanges, and looting of border villages, prompting internal displacement on both sides. Kampala has pledged stronger coordination with DRC authorities and regional actors to stabilize the area, though residents complain that heavy militarization exacerbates civilian hardships rather than resolving the underlying conflict. The situation risks further destabilizing trade routes and regional security in the Great Lakes region.
