Togo extends northern state of emergency amid tensions

Togo has renewed a state of emergency in its northern Savanes region amid ongoing political tensions and security concerns, heightening friction between the government and opposition groups.

In early March 2026 Togo’s National Assembly approved a twelve‑month extension of the state of emergency in the Savanes region, effective from 13 March. The government cites persistent terrorist threats along the northern border and the need to protect regional trade corridors as justification. This measure, first established in 2022, restricts certain freedoms and bolsters security forces’ powers. Opposition groups and civil society criticize the move as overly broad and politically motivated, arguing it could be used to suppress dissent and normalize emergency rule. They warn that blending security decrees with constitutional and legislative changes risks deepening social unrest and militarizing governance.
