Tanzania's Marburg virus disease outbreak in Kagera region was declared over on 13 March 2025 after 42 days without new confirmed cases.
Tanzania declared an end to its Marburg virus disease outbreak in the Kagera region on 13 March 2025, following the standard 42‑day, or two incubation periods, since the last confirmed case was reported. The outbreak, first noted in January 2025, centered on Biharamulo district and had reported a total of two confirmed cases and eight probable cases, all of which were fatal. The Ministry of Health, supported by WHO and other partners, carried out intensive surveillance, contact tracing, and community engagement to contain transmission. The declaration marks a significant milestone in Tanzania's public health response capacity.
