RSF advances toward El Obeid in central Sudan

The Rapid Support Forces captured Bara, a town about 40 miles north of El Obeid, the Sudanese Armed Forces headquarters in central Sudan, on March 16. The RSF used artillery, drone, and ground forces in the assault, forcing the SAF to retreat south. Bara’s capture gave the RSF a key staging point to threaten El Obeid and sever critical supply routes linking the SAF’s northern and southern positions. The RSF also launched a coordinated attack on Dilling, a highway town south of El Obeid, but the SAF repelled it. These moves highlight how both sides are seeking to consolidate control over central Sudan even as wider peace efforts stall.
