Venezuela's oil industry infrastructure vulnerable to frequent spills
Venezuela's aging and poorly maintained oil pipelines are prone to frequent spills that threaten local ecosystems and waterways.
Venezuela's oil infrastructure, particularly its pipeline network for transporting oil from wells to refineries, has not been upgraded in about 50 years. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the network consists of only 25 operational pipelines, which are prone to daily spills. These chronic leaks pose a persistent environmental risk, contaminating soil and waterways around oil-producing regions and contributing to long‑term degradation of ecosystems in affected areas.
