Trinidad and Tobago Confirms Ongoing Testing for Oropouche Virus; Dengue Cases Rise

Trinidad and Tobago health authorities confirm dengue cases have risen by over 100 in two weeks, alongside ongoing Oropouche virus testing, raising concerns about vector‑borne disease spread.

Health Minister Terrance Deyalsingh confirmed that the number of laboratory‑confirmed dengue cases in Trinidad and Tobago has increased by more than 100 over a two‑week period, reaching 813 from a previous 712, with deaths remaining at eight. The Ministry has also initiated tests for Oropouche virus following a PAHO epidemiological alert, although no positive Oropouche cases have been reported so far. Symptoms of dengue and Oropouche include fever, severe headache, joint and muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, and in some cases rash or neurological manifestations. Public health inspectors have issued more than 400 notices to households with uncovered water‑holding containers that serve as mosquito breeding sites, highlighting ongoing vector‑borne disease risk.
