Heavy rains trigger new floods in Gaza Province

Intense rainfall in southern Mozambique has caused renewed river overflows and localized flooding in Gaza Province, disrupting transport and raising concerns over lingering cholera and waterborne risk

Recent heavy rains have caused rivers in Gaza Province to swell again, leading to localized flooding in low‑lying areas around Xai‑Xai and Chókwè. Authorities report that sections of key roads, including parts of the national highway network, have become impassable or are under water, hampering relief and transport. The new flooding follows an already severe 2025–2026 rainy‑season cycle that damaged housing, farmland, and water infrastructure. Health officials warn that stagnant water and damaged sanitation systems could increase cholera and other waterborne disease transmission, particularly in evacuation‑camp areas still recovering from earlier floods. Humanitarian agencies are monitoring rivers and coordinating contingency plans for further evacuations if levels rise further.
