New chikungunya spike prompts health alert in Mauritius

Mauritius health authorities report 46 new chikungunya infections in the past week, raising active cases and triggering renewed vector control and public awareness campaigns across the island.

Mauritius has recorded 46 new chikungunya infections over the past seven days, according to a recent ministry statement. Health officials estimate that around 18 cases remain active, mainly in coastal and peri‑urban areas. The spike follows earlier warnings about increasing mosquito activity due to seasonal rains and standing water. The Ministry of Health has intensified fogging operations, larval surveillance, and community campaigns urging residents to eliminate breeding sites and protect themselves from bites. Clinics have been instructed to monitor for fever, rash, and joint pain consistent with chikungunya and to report suspected cases promptly. Authorities stress that most patients recover with supportive care, but vulnerable groups are advised to seek medical attention early if symptoms appear.
