In an early 2026 parliamentary session, Lesotho’s Finance Minister Dr. Retšelisitsoe Matlanyane presented the 2026/27 fiscal plan, signaling a cautious but reform‑oriented approach to the economy. The government targets steady growth of around 2.2 percent, emphasizing job creation and sectoral diversification to ease youth unemployment. Key priorities include deepening SACU revenue reforms, expanding water royalties, and supporting construction and services linked to the Lesotho Highlands Water Project II. The plan also stresses tighter public spending, improved tax administration, and greater resilience against external pressures such as global trade volatility and energy costs. The move is intended to shift Lesotho toward a more domestically driven growth model.
