Severe flooding triggers health alert in Kenya

Heavy rains and widespread flooding have prompted Kenya's Ministry of Health to raise an alert for potential cholera, malaria, typhoid and other disease outbreaks across several regions.

Following torrential rains and severe flooding across multiple regions, Kenya's Ministry of Health has issued an elevated disease outbreak alert for cholera, malaria, typhoid, dengue and respiratory illnesses. Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni directed county health teams to enhance surveillance, ensure safe water supplies, and reinforce hygiene messaging to communities. The alert coincides with government efforts to assist thousands displaced by the floods, including emergency shelter and food distribution. Health authorities are particularly concerned about overcrowded informal settlements and areas with damaged sanitation infrastructure, where contaminated water and stagnant pools increase the risk of waterborne and vector‑borne diseases. Public advisories urge residents to drink boiled or treated water, use mosquito nets, avoid flooded areas, and seek care promptly for fever or diarrhea.
