Government Announces New Coastal Cleanup Initiative

Ivory Coast's environmental ministry has launched a nationwide coastal cleanup to address rising plastic pollution and marine debris along its shoreline.

The Ivorian government announced a new coastal cleanup initiative aimed at removing plastic waste and other debris from beaches and estuaries along the country's Atlantic coastline. The program, coordinated by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, will mobilize local communities, volunteers, and private sector partners to conduct monthly cleanups in coastal cities including Abidjan, Grand-Bassam, and San Pedro. Officials cited growing concerns over marine pollution, impacts on tourism, and risks to fisheries and biodiversity as key drivers. The initiative also includes expanded recycling infrastructure and public awareness campaigns promoting reduced single‑use plastics and responsible waste management.
