Guinea-Bissau secures new IMF funding despite missed targets
Guinea-Bissau obtained fresh IMF financing after completing key programme reviews, even though it fell short of several reform benchmarks.
The International Monetary Fund has approved additional funding for Guinea-Bissau following the completion of its ninth and tenth reviews of the Extended Credit Facility arrangement. Approximately $3.2 million in new financing has been unlocked, bringing total disbursements under the programme to about $50.8 million. Despite strong economic growth of 5.5 percent in 2025, driven largely by cashew exports, the government struggled to meet key targets because of weak revenue collection and fiscal pressures. The IMF extended the programme into 2026, urging authorities to strengthen reforms and improve public financial management to safeguard macroeconomic stability.
