Finland eyes smaller fiscal deficit in 2026

Finland's coalition government agrees on a 2026 fiscal plan targeting a smaller budget deficit while supporting growth and controlling public spending.

Finland's centre-right coalition has agreed on a comprehensive fiscal plan for 2026 that projects a smaller budget deficit of around €8.7 billion, down from earlier levels, as part of efforts to rebalance public finances. The plan aims to sustain economic growth by moderating spending, particularly in transfers to the National Housing Fund, which is expected to drop from roughly €13.2 billion in 2025 to about €2.3 billion in 2026. The government emphasizes responsible fiscal management amid lingering post-downturn economic weakness and weak private demand, while also signaling continued support for investment and labor market reforms. The updated fiscal path is intended to restore confidence in Finland's public finances as the economy emerges from a period of slow growth.
