Tigray civilians flee amid renewed federal troop buildup

Residents of Ethiopia’s Tigray region are fleeing amid renewed clashes as federal forces advance toward key towns, raising fears of a fresh civil war.

In northern Ethiopia’s Tigray region, federal troops have intensified movements into contested areas, prompting thousands of civilians to flee toward safer zones. Clashes have flared in western Tigray, where the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and federal forces, supported by Amhara militias, are engaged in renewed fighting over disputed territory. Tigrayan officials accuse the federal government of encircling the region, while Addis Ababa frames the deployments as restoring constitutional order. The surge in violence has disrupted humanitarian aid and brought back memories of the 2020–2022 war, undermining the fragile Pretoria peace framework and raising fears of a wider regional conflict.
