Recent environmental emergency in Ethiopia

A recent environmental emergency in Ethiopia involved severe flooding and landslides in the Gamo Zone.

Torrential rains in the Gamo Zone of southern Ethiopia triggered deadly landslides and flash floods between 10 and 11 March 2026. Over 3,000 people were displaced, and at least 125 people died, with others still missing. The floods damaged homes, blocked roads, and hampered rescue and relief efforts. The affected area continues to face humanitarian needs for food, shelter, and healthcare.
