Panama has recorded 19 influenza‑related deaths in 2026 and remains on a health alert due to a significant increase in deaths associated with influenza.
According to Panama’s Ministry of Health (MINSA) epidemiological reports, the country has recorded 19 deaths from influenza in 2026, with four new fatalities reported during epidemiological week 4 (January 25–31). The health authorities note that 89.5% of the deaths occurred in unvaccinated individuals and 73.7% in people with risk factors such as advanced age, metabolic, cardiovascular, and kidney diseases. The country remains on an alert threshold for influenza‑related deaths, and officials urge reinforced preventive measures, including vaccination and self‑care, especially for older adults, young children, and those with comorbidities. Other respiratory viruses, including RSV, metapneumovirus, rhinovirus, and COVID‑19, are also circulating, increasing the risk of complications.
