US tariff and trade policy threatens Nicaragua’s export sector

Upcoming US tariff hikes and potential exclusion from CAFTA‑DR pose a direct threat to Nicaragua’s reliance on exports bound for the United States.

Nicaragua’s export‑dependent economy faces growing risks from US trade policy shifts. The IMF and other analyses note that many Nicaraguan exports already face an 18% US tariff on goods not covered by CAFTA‑DR, and that Washington plans to impose further tariff increases on selected Nicaraguan products in 2027 and 2028. These hikes would disproportionately affect Nicaragua compared with neighboring countries, reducing the competitiveness of its exports in the US market. Additionally, proposed legislation in the US Congress could threaten Nicaragua’s continued membership in the CAFTA‑DR free trade agreement, which would significantly disrupt export flows and value‑added sectors such as automotive wiring, beef, and premium cigars. If enacted, these measures would represent a coordinated economic threat, constraining growth, reducing export revenues, and exposing Nicaragua to external financial pressure and possible balance of payments stress.
