Djibouti‑Eritrea border tensions escalate after Qatari withdrawal

Djibouti has formally accused Eritrea of moving troops into the disputed Ras Doumeira area along their border after Qatari peacekeepers withdrew their contingent, reigniting a longstanding territorial dispute. The Djiboutian government placed its military on high alert, lodged formal complaints with the United Nations and African Union, and warned that any attempt to settle the issue by force would be unacceptable. The UN Security Council has urged both sides to exercise restraint and resolve the dispute through peaceful means, while AU officials have pledged to deploy monitoring teams to the border region to prevent escalation. Djibouti has repeatedly emphasized that its preference is a negotiated, law‑based resolution, even as regional analysts warn that unfinished boundary issues and the absence of neutral peacekeepers could increase the risk of renewed clashes in this strategically sensitive stretch of the Horn of Africa.
