Rebel raid on Muchacha mining site in Ituri

An ISIS-linked armed group attacked a mining facility near Muchacha in Ituri province overnight, killing at least seven civilians and abducting dozens, according to local authorities and civil society

On the night of March 11–12, 2026, the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an armed group linked to the Islamic State, raided the Muchacha mining site in Mambasa territory, Ituri province, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Militants stormed the facility, set parts of the operation on fire, and looted equipment before fleeing. Local civil society organizations reported that at least seven civilians were killed during the assault, and dozens more were abducted. The raid triggered widespread displacement as residents in nearby villages fled, fearing further attacks. Authorities believe the ADF targeted the mining infrastructure, operated by a Chinese‑linked company, to secure funding and undermine state control over key resource areas. The government has strongly condemned the attack and reiterated its commitment to continuing military operations against armed groups in the region.
