Ortega regime’s repression infrastructure retains control over Nicaraguan population

UN‑linked human rights experts describe an entrenched state apparatus under Ortega and Murillo that systematically violates rights and surveils both citizens and exiles.

A UN‑sponsored group of independent human rights experts on Nicaragua reports that the government finances the repression of opponents through illicit use of public funds and maintains a transnational surveillance network targeting exiles. The regime integrates state and party structures into a single repressive machine, using security forces, intelligence bodies and the Sandinista National Liberation Front in a coordinated campaign of political persecution, mass arbitrary detention and revocation of citizenship. UN experts urge accountability mechanisms, restoration of civic space and concrete measures to guarantee the rights of all Nicaraguans, including those abroad.
