Shelling in Goma Sparks Renewed Civilian Casualties

Intense artillery exchanges between Congolese forces and M23 rebels in Goma have reportedly killed several civilians and injured others in residential neighborhoods.

On 26 March 2026, renewed heavy shelling hit parts of Goma in eastern DRC, amid escalating clashes between the Congolese national army and M23 rebels. The bombardment, concentrated in densely populated urban areas, caused multiple civilian casualties and damaged homes and infrastructure. Local authorities and humanitarian workers reported several deaths and a surge of injured seeking treatment at overwhelmed medical facilities. The United Nations and regional actors have called for an immediate ceasefire and better protection of civilians in and around the city. The episode underscores fragile security conditions despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to stabilize eastern DRC.
