Measles outbreak spreading in Mexico, Jalisco most affected state
Mexico faces a worsening measles outbreak with thousands of confirmed cases since 2025, including over 2,700 cases in 2026 so far; Jalisco reports the majority of current cases.
The federal government has issued warnings urging vaccination against measles as the country contends with a significant and ongoing outbreak of this highly contagious airborne disease. Since the start of 2025, Mexico has recorded more than 9,100 confirmed measles cases, with nearly 30% documented in 2026, primarily affecting infants and young children. Almost 60% of 2026 national cases are concentrated in Jalisco, making the state the outbreak epicenter. Health authorities have responded with intensified vaccination campaigns, particularly targeting people aged 13 to 49 in Jalisco and several other high‑incidence states, while downplaying the severity by emphasizing that the vaccination strategy is limiting widespread transmission.
