Chad’s border security crisis with Sudan escalates

Chad faces heightened border tensions with Sudan after a recent drone strike and cross‑border clashes, prompting military alerts and political concern over regional spillover.

Chad’s eastern border with Sudan has become a flashpoint as drone strikes and cross‑border fighting intensify regional instability. A recent strike on Mabrouka killed at least 16 civilians during a Ramadan gathering, prompting President Déby to close the 1,300‑kilometer border and place the army on maximum alert. Heavy clashes in El Tina, near the border, have caused dozens of casualties on both sides, including Chadian civilians struck by stray munitions. Local volunteers crossing from Chad into Sudan have reportedly suffered heavy casualties confronting Sudanese paramilitary forces. Chad accuses Sudanese belligerents of destabilizing its territory, while Sudan accuses N’Djamena of allowing support routes for the Rapid Support Forces, raising the risk of wider regional conflict.
