Burundi Lawmakers Approve Data Protection Framework

Burundi’s parliament unanimously adopted a data protection law to regulate personal data use and boost digital trust amid rapid digitalization.

Burundi’s legislators have passed a comprehensive data protection framework to govern the collection, processing, and use of personal data across the country. The new law establishes an independent data protection authority and introduces criminal penalties for serious violations, aligning Burundi with continental standards such as the African Union Convention on Cyber Security and Personal Data Protection. The reform supports the nation’s broader digitalisation agenda, including the $92 million PAFEN project aimed at improving internet access and digital public services. By strengthening privacy safeguards and building institutional oversight, the framework is expected to increase public confidence in digital platforms and encourage greater adoption of online services in both government and private sectors.
