Rise in pertussis (whooping cough) cases and deaths in Honduras

Honduras reports a sharp increase in pertussis infections and child deaths, prompting public health alerts and vaccination campaigns.

The Honduras Ministry of Health has recorded eight pertussis (whooping cough) deaths in 2026 so far, matching the total death toll for 2025. There are currently 76 confirmed cases in 2026, representing 66.7% of all cases reported in 2025 within just the first 69 days of the year. Most deaths involve infants under three months of age, with heaviest burden in Francisco Morazán and Cortés, including the Central District, Tegucigalpa, and San Pedro Sula. Vaccination gaps are a major concern, with nearly 36,000 infants either unvaccinated or with incomplete schedules nationwide. Health authorities are urging pregnant women to be vaccinated between 26 and 37 weeks of gestation and recommending that all caretakers ensure infants receive timely doses of the pertussis vaccine.
