Nationwide polio vaccination campaign launched in Benin
Benin launched a nationwide polio campaign targeting 4 million children under five to curb circulating variant poliovirus type 2 transmission.
The Ministry of Health in Benin launched a nationwide polio vaccination campaign aimed at protecting approximately 4 million children under five years of age using the novel oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2). This campaign responds to recent confirmed cases of circulating variant poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) reported in 2025 in the Plateau and Borgou departments, alongside environmental detections in wastewater. The initiative is backed by the African Regional Certification Commission recommendation to conduct a nationwide vaccination drive to prevent further spread, especially in border areas with Nigeria. The campaign focuses on strengthening surveillance, increasing vaccination coverage, and safeguarding children in vulnerable communities.
