Timor-Leste faces diplomatic tensions over Myanmar war crimes case

Timor-Leste's legal action against Myanmar junta figures over alleged war crimes has escalated regional diplomatic conflict, drawing Myanmar's formal protest and expulsion of a Timorese diplomat.

Timor-Leste has become embroiled in a diplomatic conflict with Myanmar after its justice authorities opened proceedings against Myanmar junta leaders over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed since the 2021 coup. The case was initiated via a complaint from the Chin Human Rights Organization, which chose Timor-Leste for its perceived independent judiciary and sympathy toward Myanmar's persecuted Chin population. Myanmar views engagement with an opposition-linked organization as a breach of established norms and the ASEAN charter, responding by summoning Timor-Leste's Chargé d'Affaires and ordering the diplomatic mission's head to leave within seven days. This action signals rising friction within ASEAN as Timor-Leste's legal boldness challenges the bloc's traditional principle of non-interference, potentially setting a precedent for regional accountability of cross-border atrocities.
