New cholera alert issued in northern Tajikistan

Tajik authorities have issued a cholera alert in the Sughd region after a cluster of suspected cases was detected in rural clinics near Khujand.

The Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Population has launched an emergency response in parts of northern Tajikistan, concentrating on the Sughd region. Several rural clinics near Khujand have reported a marked rise in patients with acute diarrhoea and vomiting, prompting local authorities to label the situation as a suspected cholera outbreak. Rapid testing is underway, and health teams are educating communities on hygiene, safe water use, and safe food handling. Temporary isolation zones have been set up while water sources and sanitation facilities are being inspected. Public advisories urge residents to avoid untreated water and to seek medical help immediately if symptoms appear. The government has pledged to provide updates once laboratory confirmation and case counts are available.
