Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan sign border agreement, ease tensions

Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan sign a March 2026 border agreement easing tensions, including land swaps, joint water management, and limits on drones and heavy military equipment along the disputed border.

In March 2026 Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan signed a landmark agreement to resolve long‑standing disputes over their contested border. The deal includes mutual land swaps of equal size, shared management and use of water resources and facilities, and a commitment not to deploy drones or station heavy military equipment or auxiliary forces along the boundary. The agreement follows a violent 2022 border conflict that killed at least 37 civilians and involved apparent war crimes by both sides, yet neither government has credibly held its own forces accountable. The new pact aims to stabilize the frontier and reduce the risk of renewed clashes, though implementation and trust‑building remain key challenges.
