Sri Lanka Denies US and Iran Military Access as Naval Clash Escalates

Sri Lanka has refused both US and Iranian requests for military access, maintaining its neutrality amid escalating naval tensions in the Indian Ocean following a US attack on an Iranian frigate near i

In early March 2026, Sri Lankan authorities declined a US request to station two armed warplanes at Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport and an Iranian request for three naval vessels to make a port call. The denials underscore Colombo's stance of neutrality amid the US–Israel–Iran conflict. The incident followed a US torpedo strike on the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena off Sri Lanka's southern coast on March 4, which killed at least 84 sailors while the Sri Lanka Navy rescued 32 survivors. The island's positioning in the Indian Ocean has drawn it into the wider geopolitical struggle, yet Sri Lanka insists on non-alignment, citing its neutrality and adherence to international law.
