El Salvador declares national state of emergency amid spike in gang‑linked violence

El Salvador imposes a nationwide state of emergency and intensifies security operations following a surge in killings linked to gang‑government negotiations.

Between March 25 and March 27, 87 Salvadorans were murdered in a wave of violence widely attributed to the Mara Salvatrucha (MS‑13) gang exercising political leverage over the government. In response, President Nayib Bukele and his legislative allies declared a national state of emergency, curtailing constitutional rights such as freedom of assembly and access to legal counsel. Security forces have deployed more broadly, conducting thousands of arrests and raising concerns about extrajudicial actions and human rights abuses. The episode reflects a pattern in which impasses in secret negotiations between the government and gangs are followed by spikes in homicides, followed by harsh crackdowns and tightened security laws.
