Ho Chi Minh City has seen a notable increase in severe hand, foot, and mouth disease cases, driven primarily by the Enterovirus 71 (EV71) subtype. The city recorded 1,225 cases within a week, with Côn Đảo Special Zone, Nhà Bè commune, and Bình Tân ward having the highest incidence per 100,000 people. EV71 can cause serious complications involving the neurological, respiratory, and circulatory systems, requiring immediate hospitalization. Health authorities warn that this surge is an alarming sign for the current epidemic season and urge parents to recognize early warning signs and seek prompt medical care.
