World Bank revises Myanmar's 2025/26 GDP contraction forecast

The World Bank updates its assessment of Myanmar's economic slide, projecting a 2.5% GDP contraction for the 2025/26 fiscal year due to civil war and earthquake impacts.

The World Bank has revised its outlook for Myanmar, concluding that the country's economy will contract by 2.5% in the 2025/26 financial year. The institution attributes this downturn to the combined effects of four years of civil war and the destructive March magnitude‑7.7 earthquake, which devastated infrastructure and disrupted production across agriculture, manufacturing, and services. The report highlights that factory closures, supply chain breakdowns, labour shortages, and damage to transport and energy networks have sharply reduced output. Reconstruction is expected to spur a moderate rebound to around 3% growth in FY2026/27, but weak domestic demand, financing gaps, and ongoing conflict will constrain recovery. The World Bank also warns of persistently high inflation and deepening poverty for the population.
