Cuba warns of rising forest fire risk in early 2026

Cuban authorities warn of an increased risk of forest fires in early 2026 due to drought and deteriorating forest infrastructure.

Cuba, already facing extended power outages, food scarcity, health crises, and severe economic downturn, is now confronting a significant surge in forest fire risk for the early months of 2026. Officials cite prolonged drought, deteriorated forest infrastructure, and an abundance of flammable vegetation as key factors that could exacerbate the fire season from January to May, especially in the western province of Pinar del Río. State media reports suggest that Pinar del Río could experience between 85 and 112 forest fires during this peak period, with potential damage affecting up to 4,000 hectares. This anticipated rise in forest fires adds to the burden on a nation already struggling with infrastructure deterioration and environmental challenges.
