Mongolia inaugurates first large-scale wastewater recycling plant

Mongolia launched its first major wastewater recycling plant on March 16, 2026, treating up to 50,000 cubic meters of water daily for industrial use in Ulaanbaatar.

On March 16, 2026, Mongolia inaugurated its first large-scale wastewater recycling plant in Ulaanbaatar as part of the Water Compact agreement with the U.S. Millennium Challenge Corporation. Designed to treat up to 50,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day, the facility will recycle roughly 18 million cubic meters annually for use in the capital’s third and fourth thermal power plants. This project reduces reliance on fresh groundwater and helps protect the Tuul River ecosystem while supporting long-term water security amid rapid urbanization. Officially opened by President U. Khurelsukh and U.S. representatives, the plant marks a milestone in Mongolia’s water management and sustainable energy strategy.
