Increase in Fine Particulate Matter Levels Recorded in Several Cities Across the Country

Several Bulgarian cities are experiencing elevated levels of fine particulate matter, with exceedances noted above the permitted limit in Sofia, Plovdiv, Pernik, and Sliven.

Recent data from the Agency’s daily bulletin indicates that several Bulgarian cities have recorded exceedances of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) levels above the permitted limit of 50 micrograms per cubic meter. Sofia displayed the most serious readings, ranging from 2.05 to 3.48 times over the norm, while Plovdiv and Pernik showed levels between 2.18 and 2.82 times above the norm, and Sliven reached 2.18 times above the limit. Forecasts suggest moderate exceedances may persist in certain districts of Sofia in the coming days. Authorities have recommended that residents minimize exposure by using public transport, reducing vehicle use, and shifting from solid-fuel heating where possible to mitigate health risks.
