Clashes at anti-government protest in Brussels

On 12 March 2026, tens of thousands of demonstrators took part in a nationwide day of action against federal austerity and labour reforms in Brussels, one of the largest protests in recent years. The focus was on changes to the wage indexation system, greater labour flexibility, and new pension rules introduced by Prime Minister Bart De Wever’s government. Police reported around 80,000 participants, while unions estimated more than 100,000. Services including transport, airports and schools were disrupted. Near the US Embassy on Kunst-Wet, police used tear gas to disperse a group of far‑left, anti‑fascist activists, pushing protesters back and making around 50 administrative detentions to maintain order.
