Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan ratify border deal amid tensions
Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan move to implement a contentious border agreement affecting civilians in the Ferghana Valley region.
Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov has signed into law the ratification of the Kyrgyzstan–Tajikistan border agreement, implementing a deal that involves land swaps and new arrangements for water resources and border management. The agreement follows a 2022 border conflict that killed at least 37 civilians and involved apparent war crimes by both sides. Human Rights Watch and other observers warn that the implementation phase risks further tension and rights violations for tens of thousands of people living along the border.
