Toxic air and acid rain in Tehran after oil facility strikes

Iranian authorities warn of toxic air and acid rain in Tehran following recent oil depot strikes that released heavy pollutants and created hazardous conditions for residents.

Iranian officials have issued alerts about severe air pollution and the risk of acid rain in Tehran following strikes on oil storage facilities in early March 2026. The explosions released large quantities of hydrocarbons, sulfur oxides, and nitrogen oxides, degrading air quality across the capital and neighboring Karaj. Subsequent rainfall, conditionally termed acid rain, has raised concerns about chemical burns, respiratory problems, and potential contamination of water sources. The Red Crescent and the Department of Environment have urged residents to stay indoors and avoid outdoor exposure. Medical facilities in Tehran Province have been placed on high alert, and the government has appealed to the United Nations over the environmental and humanitarian crisis.
