Ongoing environmental degradation in Syria due to war-related pollution, soil erosion, deforestation and air pollution.
Continuous bombings, scorched-earth tactics and militant activities have heavily degraded Syrian soil, increased heavy metal concentrations, and caused widespread deforestation. Research indicates that forest cover has decreased dramatically since 2010, and air pollution has risen significantly due to smoke from burning oil wells and primitive refineries. These factors have reduced agricultural productivity, contaminated water and air, and contributed to displacement and chronic health issues.
