Police raid targets major criminal organization in Rio favelas
Large‑scale police operation against Comando Vermelho in Rio's Alemão and Penha favelas triggers intense gunfire and blockades.
On 28 October, police in Rio de Janeiro launched a massive operation targeting the Comando Vermelho (CV), one of Brazil’s largest criminal organizations. Over 2,500 civil and military police officers raided the CV‑controlled Alemão and Penha favelas, sparking a 15‑hour shoot‑out. At least 121 people were killed, including four officers. CV operatives dropped bombs from drones, ignited roadside fires, and commandeered buses and trucks to block major roads, effectively shutting down parts of the city. Schools, universities, and clinics in the area closed during the operation.
