Brazil votes to allow most projects and farms to skip environmental licensing

Brazilian lawmakers have approved a law that removes environmental licensing requirements for many projects and farms, raising the risk of increased deforestation and ecosystem damage.

Brazil's Congress has passed a law that overturns key environmental protections previously vetoed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, including provisions that allowed most infrastructure projects and farms to operate without environmental licensing. Environmental groups warn this 'devastation bill' will enable large‑scale deforestation, compromise indigenous and traditional communities, and undermine Brazil's climate commitments. The law also relaxes rules for illegally deforested or land‑grabbed farms, permitting them to continue operations and sell products without proper licenses.
