Tonga Faces Inflation Risk From Middle East Conflict As Reserve Bank Holds Neutral Policy

Escalating Middle East conflict poses inflation risk to Tonga via fuel and shipping disruptions, according to the National Reserve Bank of Tonga.

The National Reserve Bank of Tonga has warned that the escalating conflict in the Middle East could lead to rising prices in Tonga due to disruptions in global fuel and shipping markets. Governor Tatafu Moeaki stated that even a short and contained conflict may cause a temporary inflation shock, while a prolonged disruption could intensify cost-of-living pressures on households and businesses. The Bank is maintaining a neutral policy stance while closely monitoring global developments, noting that global shocks can quickly affect small island states like Tonga.
